DAY 12 THURS 4/15/10 67 MILES

WE DECIDED TO START CUTTING UP AT THE END OF THE I10 INSTEAD OF GOING THE SOUTHERN ROUTE MAINLY BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE THE TIME.NOW WE WILL HAVE MORE TIME ON THE EAST COAST AND TO DRIVE BACK.I PERSONALLY AM PLANNING FOR 2 MONTHS BUT WOULD LIKE TO DO THE RIDE IN 6 WEEKS SO WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES.I LEFT THE EASTERN SIDE OF TUCSON AT 11:00AM AND GOT 35 MILES BY 1:30PM.THERE WAS ALOT OF MOUNTAINS ON THE LAST COUPLE OF STRECHES SO THERE IS HALF SLOW GOING CLIMBING HILLS AND HALF DOWN HILL SO IT KIND OF EVENS OUT.ITS NOT THE HILLS THAT BOTHER ME ITS THE HEADWIND THAT IS THE WORST.I WAS LEAVING FOR THE SECOND HALF OF MY DAY I REALIZED THAT I HAD THE 3RD FLAT OF THE TRIP.THIS TIME IT WAS THE SMALLEST LITTLE TINY PIECE OF STEEL BELT FROM A CAR OR TRUCK TIRE.ONLY 2 PATCHLESS TUBES LEFT AND THEY ARE THE ONES IN MY TIRES RIGHT NOW.WE LOOKED UP BIKE SHOPS AND THE NEXT ONE IS IN A HUNDRED MILES.OH YEAH NONE OF THE PATCHES HELD UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE PACKED DOWN BIKE SO WE ARE KEEPING OUR FINGERS CROSSED.WE DO HAVE KARENS BIKE SO WE CAN USE HER TUBES IF WE ABSOLTLEY HAVE TO.

  1. Keep riding hard brother, you'll get those tires before you need them. A piece of advice, buy thorn resistant tubes and thorn liners. Obviously they are twice as heavy, if not more but well worth it. Your already hauling a huge load, who cares. My bet is that you would not get another flat until you hit that other Coast!
